LESSON PLAN ONE: PRIMARY COLOR MODEL MAGIC PLAY

While observing I made it a point to ask my co-operating teacher about the levels of knowledge my classroom had before my incoming. We discussed a number of topics from sight words with letters of the week, previous materials they have worked with before, and one that caught my attention, which was that they were working with the primary colors. It didn’t take long for me to connect this to my Big Idea of Celebration and the colors we use. I connected this to my Disciplinary Literacy course which introduced me to Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. This bridged both the art concept and color theory with the idea of imagination and play, both of material and creation. I was also informed that the students had previous experience with Playdough colors and wanted to expand on their 3D molding skills in a more permanent capacity. I plan to also introduce the students to basic ASL through the few colors mentioned in the book, expanding upon this later on. This lesson will not only be a great molding and sculpting addition to the curriculum, but a leaping point for our future lessons involving the celebration of color and the world around us.

LESSON PLAN TWO: PORTRAITS AND PICTURES OF LIFE AT HOME

When I was initially introduced to the classroom of kindergarteners during Week 1, I was able to meet with each of them personally to learn a little more about their likes, dislikes, and general character while matching a name to a face. Many of them had lots to say about what they wanted to become when they were older, how many brothers and sisters they had, or what their favorite subject was in school. But one answer that several of them had when I asked about what they liked to do in art, was that they liked to draw, specifically draw their family. This first connected me to the idea of connecting materials and subject matter to the same Big Idea of Family. I wanted to start these young artists thinking about what similar colors look like and defining warm and cool color families. This will become the second of two weeks involving ideas of color and family and transition into Week 3 when we return from Spring Break with Storytelling. By having students practice representation through drawing, they will have an introductory level of how things can look similar or different just by changing size, color, shape, or labeling and will be a beneficial tool for our future lesson plans together.

LESSON PLAN THREE: STORYTELLING THROUGH STAINED-GLASS WATERCOLOR

This lesson is revolved around my in-class practice medium teaching. I choose watercolor for its vast stylistic use and unlimited potential. I was really drawn to the ability to make watercolor look both dense and at the same time very opaque and translucent. This connected me to my idea of storytelling and the magnificent work being done through stained glass narratives. This lesson will take place during Week 4 and students will already have in class connections to storybook narratives that we have covered as well as their own interests outside of the classroom setting. By completing this lesson students will be learning a number of technical techniques such as outlining, wet on wet material, wet on dry, and proper brush handling. My big idea of Celebration is connected to this lesson in particular through the storytelling narrative and the joy that stories can convey through their pictures and illustrations. This will be the second part of the storytelling concept beginning in Week 3 with Matisse’s Painting with Scissors/Collage and leading into Week 5’s Big Idea of location and our surroundings.
